Clay Studio Candidates for 2011

Dan, Jane Rob (43K) The report of the nomination committee was submitted to the Board in September. They have four candidates for the election. Ballots will be mailed out the first week of October. The ballots must be postmarked and returned by October 31, 2010. The following people have been nominated:

Rob Alstatter Rob Alstaetter (498K)

I was born and raised in Michigan and attended Ferris, Western Michigan and Central Michigan Universities before beginning my career with an oil company. I was transferred to Denver, Colorado where my wife and I lived for almost 20 years with our daughter. I worked and retired from Texaco Marketing after 28 years with the company.

After retirement, my wife and I moved to Florida and lived on Anna Maria Island for nine years where I fished in the Gulf and greatly enjoyed retirement. Three years ago, my father who lived in Green Valley with my mother became ill so I came here to help care for him. After his death, my wife and I moved here to be closer to my mom.

After moving to Green Valley two years ago, I joined the Clay Studio and enrolled in a glazing class, a sculpture class and a beginning wheel class. I come to the studio 3 or 4 days a week and enjoy working on hand-building and the wheel. I've been a monitor for over a year and have come to enjoy the many people who frequent the studio. I feel fortunate to have this facility where I can regularly come and participate in activities I enjoy. I'm impressed that the studio operates totally with volunteers and look forward to serving on the Board of Directors if elected.

Don Houge I have been a member of the Clay Studio since 2004. I have taught beginning and intermediate wheel classes and assisted with various other courses. I am a member of the waiver committee and have worked with the kiln committee. I took clay courses at the U of Minnesota from Warren MacKenzie in the 60's. In 2000 I became a member of the Minnetonka Center for Arts in Minnesota (MCA) and take classes there when I'm not in Green Valley. The MCA clay studio is staffed by several professional clay artists and I have learned about the running of a studio as well as clay techniques from them. As a U of MN Medical School Professor my specialty was mind/body medicine. I think of clay as a medium to connect the mind with the body.
Jane Lombardo Jane Lombardo (312K)

I’ve been a member of the Clay Studio for nearly two years. The Clay Studio is my first experience with clay and has been made truly enjoyable by the members' camaraderie and willingness to help those who are learning.

Currently, I am a member of the Education Committee. Assessing the needs and wants of the membership and finding ways to implement ideas that the members have brought to the attention of the committee is a challenging and rewarding experience.

I would like to be a member of the Clay Studio Board of Directors. My relative inexperience with clay will give a new member's viewpoint to the discussions pertaining to the workings of the studio and needs of the members. I enjoy problem solving and turning difficult situations to benefit all parties involved.

Prior to Green Valley, I spent thirty seven years in the insurance industry. Most of my career was as a trainer and liaison between the insurance companies and the agents. I would like to continue to volunteer my time in exchange for the pleasure I receive being a member of the Green Valley Clay Studio.

Dan Wegener
Dan Wegner (423K)

Dan was born in Missouri but moved to Nebraska when he was ten. At the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, he met Pam, his wife of forty-two years. They have one son and one grandson.

He and Pam served as Bahá'í pioneers in three Central American countries for ten years. He visited a dozen countries when he served as a Bahá'í representative to the United Nations in New York. He managed to get his BA, MA and doctoral degrees in between moves. His professional life was in education. While serving as Assistant Superintendent of the Sunnyside District in Tucson, he and Pam learned about GVR so they moved to Green Valley in 2005.

His interest in clay came about three years ago when Pam "made" him take the intro and beginning wheel classes.
He was "hooked!" They enjoy working on projects together and getting to know studio members.

GLAZE COMMITTEE

The Glaze Committee has their regular monthly meeting on the first Tuesday of every month, except July and August. The meetings are held in the Monterey Room at 2 pm. A notice will be sent to the committee members. All studio members are welcome to come to the meetings. Anyone interested in joining the committee should contact the Glaze Chairman.

The Glaze Committee is responsible for maintaining all glaze supplies, approving the addition/deletion of specific glazes and preparing the monthly purchase request of glazes.

The committee will attempt to accoommodate member interests. However, the Studio will maintaiin only a relatively fixed number of glazes in stock. If a glaze is determined not to be used often, it may be removed.

The Committee maintains a written description of the glazes in use and written instructions for glaze application.

The Committee periodically holds free Glaze Demonstrations.

The Committee is responsible for refilling the dipping buckets and checking the consistency of the glaze. However, it is incumbent on all studio members to stir properly and clean all containers and return to the proper spot.
